African American Perspectives A collection of pamphlets from the collections of the Library of Congress which documents African American history and culture.

The Museum of Afro American History Features a number of online exhibits on the Million Man march, Scottsboro Boys, Black Panther Party, African American participation in World War II, Tuskegee Airmen, and other topics.

Buffalo Soldiers on the Western Frontier An exhibit from the International Museum of the Horse which focuses on the African-American 9th and 10th cavalry regiments known as the "Buffalo Soldiers". These two regiments constituted about twenty percent of the cavalry forces on the western frontier until about 1890.

Carl Van Vechten Photograph Collection "at the Library of Congress consists of 1,395 photographs taken by American photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) between 1932 and 1964. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of celebrities, including many figures from the Harlem Renaissance."

George Washington and Slavery an online exhibit from Mt. Vernon includes pictures of the slave quarters, a census of slaves, and other information.

Slave Narratives

African American Women: On-line Archival Collections Includes scanned image and text versions of slave letters and a memoir of the child of slaves.

American Slave Narratives: An Online Anthology. A University of Virginia project that uses WPA (Works Progress Administration) material.

Documenting the American South Includes slave narratives, diaries, memoirs, autobiographies and other primary historical material.

Excerpts from Slave Narratives The extracts are grouped into topics: the passage on slave ships, conditions of life, family, religion, childhood, emancipation and others.

During the months of January and February, consult the Black History Month TV Schedule for show times of many informative shows, such as "The Night Tulsa Burned." Use the correlating study guides that include extended activities, or use the guides to start the day with a featured discussion question. Go to "Great African Americans" and click on the names of some key figures in African-American history to learn more about them. Read about the Port Chicago Mutiny in a special feature on the site, which contains downloadable clips and pictures. Looking for a primary source?
